BCCC
185 for 6 (40 overs) Vikings 188 for 8 (39.4 overs)
A
match that lived up to “there’s a breathless hush in the Close
tonight….”
A
week of sunshine had baked the track into a batsmans paradise and
provided an excellent game of cricket that went right to the wire.
The
home side posted a challenging target that on most days would have
been enough to win but sadly they came up against a batsman at the
top of his game with visiting skipper Nick Brown compiling what
would be a match winning 90.
Things
started well for Bamburgh with openers Jonny Roxburgh (38) and Nick
Richardson(15) putting on 43 for the first wicket but it was Spike
Strang and veteran Billy Wright who
gave the innnings real impetus.
Spike, playing his first game of the season on his
return from University blasted his way to a brilliant unbeaten 66,
including 2 massive sixes (one off the last ball of the innings) and
with Wright extending his run of excellent form with a fine 38 he
added 95 for the 4th wicket in just 15 overs.
In
reply the visitors also got off to a flyer but though they struggled
to contain Brown the home bowlers chipped away to keep things
interesting and might have won the game but for 2 lusty blows at
the death by Vikings number 10 Taylor
in the final over.
The
pick of the attack was the wiley Wright who picked up 2 for 27 from
10 overs whilst
Will Jackson enjoyed a return to form picking up 2 wickets and
Roxburgh could count himself very unlucky that his excellent opening
spell only garnered him one victim.

Bamburgh
Castle
cc 178-7
Eglingham 138 all out.
Bamburgh returned
to winning ways at the weekend
thanks to an excellent all-round
performance.
In the absence of several established, senior players it was a selection
of youngsters who stepped up to the mark against a strong Eglingham
side.
Having somewhat surprisingly being given first use of a fast bouncy
wicket and rapid outfield the home side posted a very challenging total
thanks in the main to a remarkable knock by young opener Tom Lakey.
Finding the middle of his bat from literally the first ball he faced,
the 15 year old carried his bat scoring a wonderful 95 not out and
displaying a fine array of cover and straight drives the best of which
coming off Premier League fast bowler Gareth Bateman. Good early
partnerships with Harry Lobb (17) and Rory Gibson (20) laid the
foundation for him and he was really unlucky to run out of overs just 5
short of a magnificent hundred. In all he batted for 138 minutes, faced
129 balls and hit 14 boundaries.
Getting runs has not been too much of a problem during a recent losing
sequence for Bamburgh, it has been bowling the opposition out but on
this occasion the youngsters truly stepped up to the plate. With the
exception of the wily veteran Billy Wright who bowled what would be the
final over, none of the attack were over the age of 20 and 3 of them
haven't yet reached the ripe old age of 16 but they took a grip of their
opposition that was loosened only slightly by a couple of hard hitting
cameos by Bateman (20) and skipper Andrew Scott (33)
Without doubt the pick of the attack was 14 year old Andrew Wright,
given the new ball for the first time and producing remarkable figures
of 8 overs 2 maidens , two wickets for ten runs. He moved the ball off
the seam and in the air as well as varying his pace and the best
testimony to his control was that he didn't concede a boundary in his
spell. The rest of the bowlers all contributed and fellow teenagers Tom
Darling (2-32) and Tom Woodburn (2-34) ensured that their sides control
of the game never waned.

Bamburgh Castle CC 119 for 8 (35
overs) Wolsingham 121 for 3 (26.5 overs).
Having seen their game at Bamburgh fall victim of the
weather on the previous weekend Wolsingham stepped into the breach at
the last minute when the scheduled opponents withdrew and the boys
from County Durham certainly enjoyed their day in the sunshine.
In a game reduced to 35 overs because of the visitors travelling times
the home side batted first but failed to get out of 2nd gear in the
face of some excellent, accurate bowling. Several players got a start
but failed to convert their scores into meaningful ones with Harry
Lobb, Billy Wright, Jonty Sutherland and Mike Brookes all getting into
the teens, albeit very slowly. Only Robbie, the younger of the
Sutherland brothers made it into the 20's but he was left not out on
20 as the lower order perished in the search of quick late runs.
In reply the visitors were troubled early on by the probing of Andrew
Wright and he dismissed opener Hanlon quite cheaply thanks to an
excellent catch in the gully by Tom Woodburn but a partenrship of 63
between Dalton (34) and Watson (45 not out) went a long way to guiding
them home. The Bamburgh bowlers tried hard to take the wickets that
would have halted the chase and Alex davis and young Woddburn did make
minor inroads but in truth the penetration and accuracy shown by their
opponents was lacking.

for 6 (20 overs).
29th August 2011
BCCC 109 all out. Simonside 60

On a typical Bank Holiday day the teams took to the
field in a near gale force wind and squally rain having decided to
play on regardless as the ladies of the club were working hard to
raise funds from the hardy holiday makers with the offer of delicious
cream teams.
Sensibly the game was shortened to one of just 30 overs with the home
side having the dubious honour of taking first use of the track. From
the very first ball when opener Harry Lobb should have been caught and
bowled batting proved difficult to many and it was slightly surprising
that the main stays of the innings did so virtually blind courtesy of
the rain smearing their glasses. Billy Wright compiled a typically
patient 26 from his 51 minute stay and Mike Brookes finished the
day as top score with 29 from 45 balls. Apart from the 2 veterans youngster
Tom Woodburn was the only batsman to reach double figures as he hit a
brisk 11 at the death, his highest score for the club.
Sadly the weather continued to deteriorate as the visitors made their
reply and with the bowlers run ups becoming unstable and
dangerous it was decided to shake hands on an honourable, if damp,
draw.

BCCC 145 all out (34.3 overs). Gardeners
129 a.o (34 overs).
Bamburghs annual fixture against our good friends from London again
provided an excellent days cricket played in the very best of
spirit, with little between the teams.
In a 35 over game the home side again had first use of the wicket and
not for the first time this season were given a very good start by
teenage opener Tom Lakey. One of many youngsters that have come to the
fore in a transitional season the 15 year old compiled an excellent 45
and shared in the games best stand with Andrew Scott (27) as they added
55 for their 3rd wicket.
In the search for quick runs late in the innings veteran all rounder
Steve O Hara put together an excellent 37, perishing in the final over,
with excellent assistance from another teenager Sam Mavin who scored a
quickfire 12.
In reply the visitors were constantly under pressure after excellent
opening bursts by O'Hara and Andrew Wright and as they briefly
threatened to get close O'Hara came back on having reverted to his
slow left arm option in tandem with Wright who has really grown into his
role as the main seamer despite his tender age to mop up the tail.

BCCC
116 for 7. West Linton Gordons 115 a.o
Bamburgh
brought the curtain down on a weather ravaged season with a good win
against cagey and experienced opponents.
For once the home side had to bowl first and their opening attack led
brilliantly by young pace bowler Jonny Roxburgh soon made inroads. The
16 year old put in an excellent spell of 6 overs, 2 for 7 with
excellent support from his much younger partner Andrew Wright who
bowled far better than his figures of 0-18 would suggest.
The Gordons never really loosened Bamburgh’s grip, finding life
especially difficult against the wiles of veterans Eric Nicholson
(3-22) and Billy Wright (2-12) who bamboozled the tail with great
changes of pace and flight.
In reply Bamburgh were never under undue pressure once the
swashbuckling Spike Strang got into his stride. The Cambridge man, who
had earlier bagged 2 excellent stumpings, struck a peerless 51 from as
many deliveries before retiring and allow skipper Steve Robinson to
see his side home with 9 overs to spare.
